About Family Tree Funeral Company

Finding the right funeral assistance at a potentially highly stressful and upsetting time can be both difficult and daunting.

The aim of our website is to give you as much helpful information as you need.  This site has advice on such things as what to do when making funeral arrangements, and an approximate idea of what your funeral costs may be. You can always call us directly on 01453 767 769.

As you may want to know a little bit more about us before picking up the phone, below is a brief overview of who we are:

Family Tree Funeral Company was founded by James Showers in April 2005 and is located at 1 Middle Street, Stroud, Gloucestershire. Following his retirement, and with deep gratitude for all he has taught her since she joined in October 2018, Family Tree is now owned and run by Jane Diamond.

We have a bright, comfortable and private office in this building; and we will always offer to meet you at your own home.

As a fully independent and family-run modern funeral directors, we are dedicated to helping you plan and organise a funeral which is personal and meaningful; a funeral designed to honour the life of your loved one.

We cover the whole of Gloucestershire and we have arranged funerals for families in Bath, Bristol, Swindon, Tewkesbury and Malmesbury, and regularly visit Cirencester, Tetbury, Cheltenham, Gloucester, Wotton-Under-Edge and Dursley – and all points in between.

You can also be reassured that we are familiar with the nursing homes, care homes, doctors’ surgeries, churches, hospices and hospitals in the area.

Jane Diamond

My background for a number of years now has involved all things end-of-life. I’ve been co-hosting the Nailsworth Death Café since 2016 and in 2017 I began my training as an end-of-life doula which is a non-medical companion to those who are dying. As well as this, I trained with Before I Go Solutions in 2018 and offer end-of-life planning to individuals and couples. I also have a background in psychotherapy and I have found this to be incredibly useful for my work as a funeral director.

I came to work at Family Tree in October 2018 after meeting the founder James Showers at a Death Café in Stroud and we got on immediately. Following his retirement in June 2023, I am now the proud owner of the business in partnership with my husband Gianluca! It feels only right to say that Family Tree wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for James. Over two decades, he created a friendly, caring and inclusive setting for grieving families and individuals that allows the uniqueness of each life to be supported and held with kindness and respect.

In summary, death and how we engage with it is hugely important; it’s a major life event and we don’t talk about it enough. What lies at the heart of this work are people’s relationships and deep attachments to one another. It’s vital we normalise death and dying so that we can live as fully as possible.

Catherine Miller

I had never thought much about dying, death and funerals, until my interest was piqued after a conversation with a funeral director I knew. She was talking about the preparation of a friend prior to her funeral. I had never considered this to be something that happened and decided that I needed to find out more. Shortly after, I had the opportunity to be involved in this process. Not only did I find a sense of peace in this final act of the preparation of the body in readiness for the funeral journey, but I discovered that I wanted to be a part of the whole funeral arrangement process, and this led to my training as a funeral director.

There is a deep sense of fulfilment knowing that one can make a profound difference to a family at a very difficult time. Being able to walk with them through the arrangements, and create a fitting farewell for their loved one, is humbling. However extraordinary it may sound, it is possible to have a ‘good’ funeral.

Gianluca Corrado

I have spent my professional life as a woodworker, making furniture and joinery, running workshops and facilitating the maintenance and renovation of our built environment. I am a craftsman at heart and this is reflected in my approach to everything I do. I feel privileged to have met James Showers, Catherine Miller and David Lambert through my wife Jane. With complete dedication and deep compassion, Jane has brought the life-filled subject of death and dying to my own life. My role at Family Tree is a busy one, dealing with logistics and operations in order to ensure the smooth running of the business.

David Lambert

I have spent most of my working life researching, writing and campaigning about historic parks and gardens, including studies of several major London cemeteries. I have been an adviser to the National Trust, the National Lottery, English Heritage and many local authorities. More recently, I have become involved in protests about climate change and ecological collapse.

In 2019, a chance encounter with James Showers (the founder of Family Tree) at a party revealed a mutual interest not only in cemeteries but in death and dying, and led to an invitation to come along and see what Family Tree was doing. This developed to helping out when an extra pair of hands was needed and gradually becoming more involved.

From personal experience, I have long felt that our culture is not good at acknowledging and celebrating death and Family Tree’s unique way of caring for the dead and helping the bereaved create ceremonies that are meaningful and personal struck a powerful chord. Since 2019, I have assisted in all aspects of Family Tree’s work and feel privileged to be part of it.

A hands-on farewell

“It does not seem almost a month ago that we all gathered to say goodbye to J. Family and friends still agree that it was a strangely beautiful day, and beneficial to all of us in our various states of shock and grief. K (J’s friend) thanked us for ‘the proudest moment of his life’ – and it was clearly important to many others that J. had a ‘hands-on’ farewell. Thank you for that.”

“Incredible, yesterday. Most splendid funeral I have ever attended, and unfortunately I have attended many. Thank you again. I know you made my granddaughter happy. She is a different girl today, much more positive, and going back to college next week. Your “send-off” for her mother did something wonderful for her.”

“Thank you. Thank you for making what could have been a nightmare very beautiful. You inspired us to be creative and to truly celebrate our daddy openly, and we are all very grateful to you for that. It is profound and beautiful to turn sad introspection into theatrical celebration – and that was in fact the essence of our father. He would have loved it! Thank you for your patience and kindness.”

A beautiful and fitting service

“Our family cannot thank you enough for ensuring that we created a beautiful and fitting service yesterday. The flowers, which have travelled beautifully, were the most extraordinary collection ever, the coffin too, and the format was perfect. Like you, I have a very grim memory of my father’s funeral and know how badly these things can go, so we are all very grateful and ever in your debt. It is encouraging and wonderful to know that there is such care in the community.”

A wonderful send-off

“I just wanted to say a huge thank you to you for giving our mum the most wonderful send-off. The way you spoke about her was as if you had known her yourself for years. You gave the eulogy with such tenderness and respect for her. It was a beautiful service; we would not have changed anything about it. The whole experience offered by you and Jane from start to finish was just perfect. What a way to be remembered. Everyone needs a Family Tree funeral; thank goodness my sister found you.”

Understated and dignified

Unbelievably, I felt elated and so happy that with Family Tree’s guidance and creativity we had choreographed a perfect bespoke last day for Barbara and myself, and for the family there was the knowledge that B had not been alone but had remained a free spirit to the end!
I can’t thank you both enough for what you have done and how you achieved it in such an understated and dignified manner. Now at home, I am able to reflect upon the day and marvel at what a beautiful and intimate experience it was.

Your kindness, thoughtfulness and compassion

“On behalf of my mother and my wife, I sincerely thank you for all your kindness, thoughtfulness and compassion shown to us all before, during and after Dad’s funeral. It was a deeply emotional time for us and your personal assistance helped us enormously. The planning for Dad’s funeral was so trouble-free, all thanks to you. We all had no doubts that everything would run smoothly on the day with you at the helm, and as we thought, it did. The layout and contents of Dad’s service sheet just added the final touch to making Dad’s funeral so memorable for us. Thanks again for all your support.”

Dignified and intimate

“We were all extremely happy with your arrangements for Mum’s funeral. She left clear instructions for some of the main details and I believe we complied with them in a dignified and intimate way. I have not attended many funeral ceremonies in my life but I believe we all felt that we could not have done more to make it a more meaningful occasion and one in which we all could make a personal contribution. I think it can be too easy to be a superficial participant. I thank you again for your discrete participation.”

“My family and I would like to thank you and your company for the way that you handled the interment of my wife’s ashes on Monday last. It wasn’t a day that I had been looking forward to, but after I felt at ease that it had finally been done. K and I both agreed that your resume of E’s life and character was done with compassion and sympathy, although you hadn’t met her; also the reading of the poem was perfect, and seemed to reflect the spirit of the day. Our thanks again, and we hope to see you on perhaps a happier occasion.”
