We treat every person's funeral as if it were someone from our own family

what kind of funeral

“We will work with you to make it special”

Examples of basic funerals:

Traditional burial:
typically, a service at the church or cemetery chapel led by a minister, with a traditional coffin brought in our hearse, followed by burial in the churchyard or the local cemetery.

Simple cremation: a service led by a minister in the crematorium chapel, with a traditional coffin brought in our hearse, followed by the cremation.

Green Burial: a ceremony led by a minister, friend or celebrant in a specially chosen venue, followed by burial in a natural woodland burial site, or on your own land; the coffin would be biodegradable – e.g. cardboard, woven willow, bamboo, sea-grass, etc.

Burial at Sea: A funeral service held locally, followed by burial at sea in full maritime tradition a day or so later; the nearest port of embarkation is in Lymington, and we sail out to the ‘Needles’ west of the Isle of Wight for a service on the boat followed by the burial.

Many people have had the experience of going to a funeral that somehow did not feel much like the person who had died

Some ways of making it special

Include the Minister in a briefing meeting with us, to help them (and you) make the most of every opportunity of making the service personal. If you do not have a particular religious faith, we can put you in touch with a Humanist minister, or an independant celebrant who will create a beautiful and personal ceremony with you.

You can choose from a wide range of coffins and urns in traditional and environmentally friendly materials….. see our Coffins and Urns pages for some examples.

Members of the family and friends can carry the coffin – and even decorate it - themselves.
Double time can be booked at the crematorium (for approximately one third more than the regular price).

Candles can be used in many locations.

The service can include special music, played live or on CD, a time of silence, and tributes, songs, poetry, letters, and memories spoken by friends, colleagues and family members –
including children.

People can bring flowers from their gardens; these can be put on the coffin, or used to line the grave. Instead of being left at the crematorium, they can be taken to the gathering afterwards, or to a local care home or hospice.

Similarly for ashes following the cremation, there is an increasingly wide range of possibilities – and we would be pleased to guide you through any of these, with costs.

"We are writing to express our appreciation and thanks for the arrangements you made for the touching and elegant cremation service, and the beautiful service of remembrance and thanksgiving for our dear daughter R. The sympathy and understanding behind the services helped us greatly." J and V H. Fairford

Particular thanks to James Showers of Family Tree Funeral Company for the time he took to learn about Mary’s life, and for conducting a wonderfully personal secular service to say goodbye to her. J.S. Brownshill. (Family Notice in the Stroud News and Journal)
