Family Tree Funeral Company was founded in April 2005, and is located at The Old Painswick Inn, at the bottom of Gloucester St. Stroud.

It is the only independent and family-run funeral directors in Stroud, and is dedicated to helping families plan and organise a funeral that is personal and meaningful to the family and friends – designed to honour the life of the person who has died.

The company is run by James Showers.

James Showers: James trained in funeral service with the National Association of Funeral Directors, and has worked with Swindon and Gloucester Co-operative Funeral Care.

In his own words; ” My own father died after a long illness; as a family we’d never discussed or planned for the inevitable over the previous months – so when he did die nobody knew what to do or what to say. My mother was in shock, and the duty minister at the crematorium near the hospital was given minimal information to help in saying anything much about my father. It was a very brief funeral – more of a disposal really; we sat in a kind of silent disappointment after the curtains closed; and although we had a memorial service in our local church a month later, I felt that his funeral was just not good enough for us or my lovely dad. I now know it does not need to be like this……., that there is such a thing as a ‘good funeral’………, and that if the funeral is a fitting tribute to the life of the person who has died, it can embody - and even help lift - the sadness and make new memories.”
